The Organization

The East African Civil Society Organisations’ Forum (EACSOF) Kenya Chapter is a membership Non Governmental Organization that was formed in 2013 and registered in 2014. It is an autonomous umbrella body for civil society organisations operating in Kenya whose primary Mission is to provide a platform and catalyse a critical mass of organised civil society to engage in need-driven, people-centred East Africa integration and cooperation process effectively and proactively for equitable and sustainable development. EACSOF envisions a future for people built on self-determination with citizens in control of the social, economic and political capital. EACSOF is recognized as a representative body under the Consultative Dialogue Framework (CDF) adopted by the EAC Council of Ministers for Private Sector, Civil Society and Other Interest Groups during its 26th Meeting (EAC/CM26/DECISION 06). This Decision aimed to create an enabling environment for Private Sector and Civil Society participation in the integration process.

Objectives

The Main Objectives of the Forum shall be:

To effectively participate and influence the economic, social and political processes of the East Africa Community to relieve poverty, promote human rights and advance gender equity in East Africa.

Specific Objectives:

  • To provide a platform for the Kenyan Civil Society Organizations to effectively engage in the Integration Processes of the EAC.
  • To present a platform for Civil Society Organizations to package and disseminate information among the citizens of East African Community and to sensitize and educate the citizens on the East African Community’s institutional endeavors and their constitutional rights, duties and responsibilities under the East African Community treaty.
  • To effectively participate in and influence the Economic, Social and Political processes of the East African Community through policy research, lobbying and advocacy.
  • To monitor the formulation and implementation of the East African Community Policies and programs from a pro-poor and gender perspective, in order to address the needs and concerns of socially and economically marginalized and vulnerable groups.
  • To promote and advance the protection of human and people’s rights in the East African Community and to encourage efforts at deepening democracy in the region
  • Promote, protect and uphold the spirit of constitutionalism, rule of law, good governance and respect of state institution within the East African Community.
  • Ensure the participation of Civil Society Organizations in conflict management process in the region in order to uphold the respect of human rights democracy, rule of law, social justice and good governance.
  • To promote the visibility of national issue from a Civil Society Organizations’ perspective in the East African Community which will in turn relieve poverty, promote human rights and advanced gender equity in East Africa.
  • To foster the culture of the tolerance and constructive engagement in the region and amongst the East African Community partner states.
  • To encourage the adoption of the principle of the collective responsibility by partner states of the East African Community.
  • To present a concerted front through support and solidarity to the citizens’ organizations in the promotion and pursuance of any of the above objectives.
  • To foster research and consultation work on matters relevant to the objectives of the Forum.
  • To promote information dissemination, communication and documentation to the citizens of East Africa on the benefits of the integration process.

  • Networking and Information sharing with all stakeholders should be at the core of Forum’s operations.

  • Effective, proper and accurate representation of the constituent groups.
  • Competence and Professionalism.
  • Equal rights and Responsibilities.
